In December 2017 we published the opinion of the coaches of Spain and the USA about the boxing in the Dominican Republic (https://lagente.do/en/boxing-dominicana/  https://lagente.do/en/roman-anuchin/ )

From which we realized that it is very little known by the general public and the participants of this fascinating sport and professionals about the boxing in the Dominican Republic.

This prompted the idea about the necessity of the “internal opinion”. The opinion of the participants of the professional boxing industry and the Olympic amateur boxing in the Dominican Republic itself.

Today we are opening the series of the publications under the name: “The Boxing in the Dominican Republic from the first-hands”. Among the pioneers of this column are: coach of the recently opened Title Boxing Club Juan Almanzar (‘Chiri’); the executive director of the Dominican Republic Boxing Federation (FEDEBOXA) Mr. Juan Torres; The National Professional Boxing Commissioner, Mr. Franklin Nuñez; the coach with more than 30 years of experience Mr. Julio Caba.

Coach Julio Caba and his team. Julio is more than 25 years in the boxing coaching. Olympic champions and professional boxers are amidst the numerous graduates of his club.

Founded in 2008, the Title Boxing club opened the franchise in 2009 and has since expanded widely in the Americas with more than 190 locations where athletes or beginners can hone their skills.

In 2017 the Dominican businessman, owner of Corripio Group, with the staff of more than 12 thousand employees, Manuel Corripio Alonso, opened the Title Boxing club in the capital of the Dominican Republic.

Reception of the first franchise of the American club "Title Boxing" with more than 190 locations on the map of North America. Now in Santo-Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic.

The goal was to make the professional and amateur boxing in the country more popular and to expand the brand. However, up to this day, this small room with the punching bags and a small ring on the second floor of the commercial center “Novocentro” remains the only location in the republic.

So, the first opinion about the popularity of the professional and amateur boxing in the country: Meet the Title Boxing club coach: Mr. Juan Almansar:

Juan Almanzar ('Chiri'). The first coach we met in the "Title Boxing" Santo-Domingo. He started boxing at the age of 5 under the guidance of his brother, a famous professional boxer.

  • Juan, first of all a few words about yourself, how did you come into the boxing?

  • I started boxing from childhood. My coach and my promoter was the same person: my older brother. He was a professional boxer and knew a lot about the world of boxing. I was 5 years old. He gave me gloves. At the age of 6 I already had a good practice. At the age of 9 I already participated in the battles. There were no sponsors. My family was supporting me.

Then I had a coach Emanuel Batista. His club is in Rio Haina. My brother worked as a coach there. In this club I had my first qualifications.

In order to get into the “big boxing game” here, you need to work hard, participate in the ratings battles. And of course you need a good luck.

The good luck of a boxer are: a good manager and a good promoter. Which “pull” you out of the usual environment and “push” you higher to the environment of top professional boxing .

The Dominican branch of the club "Title Boxing" certainly uses the equipment of the brand "Title".

Luck may not come. Even if you train hard, and you lived to be 25 years old, and there is no luck. And in this case you need to look for work and to feed your family. So I decided to train, earn doing what I like to do. And up to today I am couching the boxers for more than 17 years.

  • Juan, there is an opinion that there is no boxing school, purely Dominican style in the Dominican Republic. What can you say about this?

  • On the contrary, the Dominican Republic has an excellent boxing school. The main problem in Dominican boxing is the absence of “patrocinios”, that is, sponsors. While there is only a minor support of the State.

What is happening if, for example, I have achieved some results and want to develop further? The only way out at the moment: I have to develop myself relying only on myself at my own expenses. Or I have to look for them outside the country.

It was not always so.

For example, just three years ago, the boxing began to grow rapidly. Especially the professional boxing.

The Ring is a must of the boxing club. For the moment there is the only one "Title Boxing" in the country. But the founder of the franchise Mr. Manuel Corripio hopes for a rapid increase in the popularity of the franchise in the Dominican Republic.

Three years ago, quality promoters came here to the country.  They found out the large number of the talented qualified athletes and just beginners boxers with the excellent physical data and growth potential.

There were not only the Dominican promoters. There were the international names. Promoters from Puerto Rico, Miami, New York.

In order to grow up a qualified boxer with the good ratings only two years were enough to them.

  • Were they individuals or companies?

  • Companies such as Shuan Boxing, Uper Promotion. Shuan Boxing is currently the largest company and will promote most of the boxers. There are also personal promoters, Dominicans. But the most famous are the names such as Top Ranc, Shuan Boxing, Uper promotion, Monquita Promotion.

  • I recently read in the newspaper “Hoy” that there is the crisis of the professional boxing in the Dominican Republic. Is this so, in your opinion?

  • I do not think that there is the crisis now. What is happening now is that if you are a professional boxer and you are engaged in a promoter or firm in the Dominican Republic, of course, they want to recoup their costs for you. But the boxer must also feed his family. And if he can not make money on boxing, he must look for work, in addition to fighting and training. There is a contradiction here: Since if you want to grow as a champion, you should be focused on the boxing only. And do not waste your time and energy on solving the problems of your home, family.

In order to focus on boxing and achieving results your personal and your family problems that distract you off the boxing should be resolved by someone else. Such assistance and sponsorship support has disappeared recently.

Many foreign managers are exporting out boxers abroad. Since if the boxer has reached a good level here in the country and does not find opponents here, he must have the opportunity to grow with his equals or higher. It was like that in the days of Tyson and Ali. But many promoters “preserve” boxers in the country. However, not many qualified boxers from abroad travel here. Therefore, sometimes it turns out that good boxers are “brewing in their own juice” among medium-level local opponents. This affects tragically their rating.

  • Juan, qualified boxers have to train somewhere. Are there clubs of the good quality besides the Title Boxing?

  • There are many places: for example Coliseo, Lo Cachorro, La Casa de los clubes. There are enough of clubs in Santo-Domingo. There are places in the Olympic Park. Most professional boxers are visiting Club Billy Thompson. The Club Billy Thompson is currently the leading playground in the Dominican Republic. Most of the professional boxers of the Dominican Republic are training here. Olympic boxing: amateur athletes mainly train in the Olympic Park.

  • Juan, can I score for the champion fight while making the qualification battles only here in the Dominican Republic?

  • Yes, we have a lot of qualified boxers in good shape, who fight in the Dominican Republic. And many professionals come to the qualification battles with them here in the country, in order to earn ratings. For example, Carlos Adames (‘El Caballo Bronco’), Mangy Valera, Juan Carlos Payano, Alberto Puello (‘La Avispa’), Juan Carlos Abreu (‘Merengue’). There are enough of the boxers with a good international rating here to attract the rating fight seekers from abroad to make them here in the country. However, many of those high rating opponents prefer not to live in the Dominican Republic.

  • Can you tell me where the professional fights take place in the Dominican Republic?

  • Many fights are arranged at the Hotel Jaragua, in the Coliseum, Club C.A.I., Casa de clubes. Also, battles take place in the casinos, which are located on the Malecon (embankment). Currently, the top is “El Jaragua“.

  • Juan, who currently invests more in boxing? Foreigners or Dominican businesses? There are a lot of rich people in the Dominican Republic. Brugal, for example?

  • For the moment the professional boxing is developing mainly with the foreign sponsors. Dominicans do not willingly sponsor the professional boxing. They invest into something reliable, real. Although the Dominican Republic has a great potential in the field of professional boxing. Dominicans are pleased to head the promotion companies.
