Hello, Vasilisa! Where are you now?

Hello Kate! I am now in Siberia, on the largest marshes in the world – Vasyugansky. There is real winter, lots of snow, low trees, bears, wolves and foxes. There is nothing on 500 km around. We travel between oil wells – I work as a field engineer for watches, month by month. Specially chose such work to be able to travel and engage in kitesurfing.

Tell me, how did it all start? How did you get on the kite?

I’ve been doing snowboarding for 7 years, and then I saw how the guys go for a ride on the kite in the Gulf of Finland, and thought – looks pretty, we must try. Then my friend and my friend in the mountain skier bought kites and began to try to fly. We were taught by a friend, but he had a bad habit of constantly telling horrible stories about how all uncontrollably fly 15 meters, and then head to the beach. It was scary.

Next winter I took one lesson from Roman Lyubimtsev on snowkiting, we left for Razliv Lake, and I flew for half an hour. I could not do it anymore-I was cold. In the summer I studied in the Gulf of Finland with my friends, and in the autumn I went to Greece with the company. And everything began to twist. I was invited to Egypt to work with children on the Kite safari, and I got to the company of people who have devoted their whole life to the kite. It was a new reality for me. I left my office work, went to Mauritius, got an IKO certificate, giving the right to teach kitesurfing around the world, and went on a free voyage. Traveled the world, taught people kite and English. In the final analysis, it was kite surfing that determined my nomadic way of life. Combine it with a five-day is not an option, because you need to travel behind the wind in different parts of the world.

Long traveled?

3,5 years. I really wanted to get sponsors, and this requires a lot of training, it’s fun to ride, glow in the media and win competitions. And I began to participate in all competitions. Started with local competitions, St. Petersburg. Then Egypt. A big push was the trip to Latin America: in Mexico I participated in two big competitions, Lord of the Wind and La Ventana Classic.

She met many important people, representatives of different companies. And I scored enough points to register for the World Championship in Egypt. There, however, lost in the qualification of the Frenchwoman – but she reached the semifinals, a very strong athlete.

You like competitions, yes?

Highly. Competitions are very useful and interesting. There you feel the spirit of the community, you know why you do all this. You see the guys and girls who are really skating and get a stimulus for development. At me, the truth, competitive character, it is not enough for me to participate simply – it would be desirable to win.

Would you advise to the novices to participate? At what point do you think a person can go and compete? Or is there no such moment?

Vasilisa Zaitseva: And now Mary Poppins!

There is such a moment. Once you understand that you meet the minimum requirements – go and try. I advise newcomers to compete. It’s such a fan! From you, no one expects anything, it’s easy psychologically, pure pleasure. And besides, it’s an opportunity to support kite surfing as a movement, a developing sport.

Tell me about your favorite tricks.

I love S-bend, frontal rotation. I like this feeling when you scroll parallel to the water and seem to lie on the air. And I also like to put tricks in the blind, although now I have a break in training – to be honest, I really miss them – and I need to restore my sports form.

Where have not you rided yet, but would love to?

With a kite I would go to South Africa, Australia and even Cape Verde, I want to ride the waves. In general, after 3 years of traveling around the world’s beaches, I would gladly start snowkiting. I love winter too. I would go to the Alps or even to the Arctic Ocean. It would be great to go to the so-called expedition with kites. Our Russian guys crossed the Bering Strait on the kite, got into the Guinness Book of Records – I think it’s very cool. I want to challenge myself, to see what I can do. And to remove a beautiful video about this, including in order to popularize kitesurfing.

It seems, for you in general, this moment of challengage is very important …

It’s true, it’s important. But it is necessary to understand whether the next challenge to you is the positive in life, or whether it destroys you. Any challenge will somehow change you internally, but it’s important at the end not to regret what you did. Perhaps I would have done something differently in my life. Maybe even less would travel. Would settle somewhere.

And you would not be bored in one place?

Actually stay in one country – this is for me and there is now the most interesting challenge. But in the coming year it will not work with my work. In addition, I do not yet have an understanding of where I would like to live on an ongoing basis. I only know that there must be sea and mountains.

You visited more than 30 countries. What about the Dominican Republic?

In the Dominican Republic, I was twice and spent there a total of 4.5 months. At first I was invited to work as an instructor in a kite school at the ClubMed in Punta Cana. I remember, I was struck by the Caribbean sky – the way it instantly changes. You look, and it seems that now begins Armageddon: torrential rain, black clouds, horror. And five minutes later, everything is gone, the sun is shining. Plus unrealistically clean beaches, beautiful palm trees. But at the same time in Punta Cana I had a feeling of a golden cage. Everything is clean, quiet, quiet and outside the hotel somehow deserted.

And the second time I flew to Cabarete, and the impression of the country changed. This is a kitesurfing corner, there is a strong community. I really liked it: my favorite Spanish, beautiful nature, the opportunity to ride not only on the kite, but also on surf. And it was there that I found sponsors for kites – at regular competitions I got acquainted with the owner of the company Star Kiteboarding, and we signed a contract. Before that, I already had a contract with the company Shinnworld, which produces boards.

You have a video in Facebook, where you sit on the coast in Cabarete and play a song on the ukulele from the Pirates of the Caribbean. What is music for you? Can you compare it to a kite?

These are my two ways of expressing myself. Extraverted and introverted. When you go to skate, it’s always attracting attention, it’s people around, it’s such a breadth, space, this is a big deal. You need to have the strength, courage, bezbashennost. And when you play the guitar or sing, it’s like for yourself, it’s something intimate, fragile. Music calms, carries harmony. Kite surfing is also harmony, but another, charged. And in music – calm.

Imagine that from tomorrow you can not ride anywhere on the boards anywhere in the world. Just disappeared all the kites, surfs, snowboards, a global ban on them. Such a stress scenario. What will you do? How can you replace these feelings?

I would love to try skydiving. Skydiving.

That is again an extreme sport?

Yes, again it! I like extreme sports not only for the thrill they give, but also for the feeling of unity with nature. It’s as if you run out in fair weather to a chamomile field, and there’s such a space around you, you can go to the right and left, you fly and you run, and you have the opportunity to think broadly, the mood rises simply from the air that you breathing in. I love sports in general, but kite surfing, snowboarding, surfing I love especially. With them you can feel the power and beauty of nature.
