The interview was recorded at a seminar at the Boxing Academy in Moscow, where Roman revealed the secrets of his school, put the technique of the pros and beginners.

But, let’s give the floor to Roman Karmazin himself:

– Roman, you trained at your own boxing school in St. Petersburg, at the Boxing Academy in Moscow. Why did you end up training in Los Angeles?

It’s all about the climate. World stars train here. Here you can train all year round, without sudden changes in pressure and temperature. Mountains and the sea are within walking distance, like the best sparring partners, managers and promoters are.

– Have you ever been in the Dominican Republic?”

Unfortunately did not happen to be there. There had repeatedly been my friend and colleague Eugene Sopitko. In his opinion, this is one of the best places for training and a getting in a good shape.

– So why then not to go to practice in the Dominican Republic? The average annual temperature fluctuations is within 5 centigrades. Humidity and air are ideal. Ecology is protected by the entire Ministry of Ecology. Unique climate, nature, sea, mountains: Harabacoa, Pico Duarte?

I myself have been thinking about this question for a long time. Why do not create the ideal conditions for the athletes and why not to train them in your country? Why not? Moreover: the climate is unique, the work capacity of athletes there goes off scale and prices are several times less than in LA. Not saying about the natural products without preservatives, farms, natural meat, since there are no such “animal factories” like in America and there is no such mass production. The athlete’s nutrition is also an important component of the quality training. You may recall the issue with Alvarez doping tests. And I am sure, the doping got into his body with meat.

However, it is not that simple:

To get the productive training a coach needs fights and opponents. He needs managers and promoters. In America it works and it’s an industry.

In the Dominican Republic this is also realistic. But we need investments, we need time. Dominican boxers have good endurance. Just the small work: to improve the technique, to tune up the heads. And then: work, work and once again work.

When you find investors and the State’s interest in the development of this magnificent sport and a highly profitable business please call me! I will support as much as I can. (smiling)

After all, boxing is not just a sport.
This is the coolest business.

Take for example Floyd Mayweather. This boxer held his first fight in the professional boxing for just 10 dollars. And now he gets hundreds of millions for the fight. Not saying about the companies and personalities who manage the fighter.

But boxing as a business is a separate long discussion.

– Roman, why not to talk about boxing in terms of business? Or is it a closed topic?

Not at all! Everything is available in the open sources. Look up the search engines. Google, Yandex.

For example my friend Floyd Mayweather: during his 21 years career in the professional boxing his own hard work brought him more than a billion.

In 2015, the World saw the most expensive boxing match in all the World boxing history. Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao made a real sports show. The ticket was over $ 500 million. Boxers’ fees were also great: the Filipino Pacquiao received about $ 110 million (plus bonuses averaging of 20 to 40 million), Mayweather got about 210 million dollars (plus bonuses of around 70 million).

“Modest” state of the champion on pension Lennox Lewis is estimated in search engines as 150 million. But it’s not even about of how much the athlete earns. This is more about how this industry works. Even if you educate just low and middle-class athletes, you are still in the black. For the training progress and outcome the coaches of the champions need opponents. So your athletes will also earn good money and improve their skills class during the sparring with the stronger opponents. This is how professional boxing is arranged. And sometimes the opponent can “shoot out” and become a star!

Look at our Vasily Lomachenko. People invested more than a million dollars into this boxer during his training career.

Those investments had been “paid off” by one single fight.

– Why the boxing is not as popular in the Dominican Republic as the baseball for example? Look at the neighboring Cuba. It has the strongest boxing school for the moment. Why so?

The boxing school in Cuba had been growing and grooming by the Soviet coaches long ago in the times of the Soviet Union. As well the Cuban coaches had been trained by Soviets. All these converged into the strong symbiosis: the gifted Cuban boxers who have the excellent natural endurance and the prominent Soviet school of boxing with its unique techniques and experience. Russians did not loose a single war during the Soviet history.

– Roman, how much the success depends on the coach? A boxer may be physically gifted person, but what depends of what hands he is in?

A coach is one of the most important components of a professional boxer. As the manager is. Diamonds are made by the skillful hands of diamond cutter. The same we can tell about the coach role in the boxer growing. A sportsman can be very gifted buy. But he scarcely will be able to climb to the top of the box without a good coach and manager. The team of professionals is always in the grate demand.

– Roman, what of the qualities or abilities is or are “a must” in the professional boxing?

The main one is the ability of working hard.

You may not inherent the outstanding physics. Working hard you still can achieve and overachieve results. Nature has provided a compensation mechanism: look, for example, at the Dominican athletes: the perfectly good shape, endurance, God gave them everything. Just a bit of school that makes them think in terms of strategy and make the quick decisions. Like Russian traditional boxing school, for example. Just add here the skillful people from another environment. Who “manufacture” the champions. And it will work alltogether.

If there is a lacking one of the skills, but there is diligence: you can go on diligence. A good coach, a good school will compensate for the missing skills and physics.

Hispanics in America are “plowmen.” They win by their strength and endurance: hit stronger and hold a blow.

That’s where the work of the coach begins: to improve the weaknesses and tighten the tactics. The boxer in the ring should be able to do everything.

Weak athletes in the World ring are the mistakes of the flawed coaches. They limit their work by the gym walls, and outside the walls they forget their athletes.

– What can you tell about your trainers?

– I had a lot of them and I’m grateful to everyone. I took something from each of them. But only Igor Mikhailovich Lebedev made the real professional and champion of me. I consider him as my main coach and teacher. He is a man with his unique training technique. The famous American coach: Freddie Roach helped me to prepare for the fights in America.

– Roman, what do you think: making a “factory of champions” in the Dominican Republic is a real challenge?

Of course, guys. God has gifted you with the excellent conditions: Magnificent climate, excellent environment, excellent physical endurance of local children. You just have to pull up the school, hire the good coaches, such as Russian ones for example, who put the school in Cuba. Maintain the infrastructure. Pull up your level. Showcase yourself.

And I’m the first guy who will bring my athletes to fight with your opponents.
